IF YOU have a penchant for long sea journeys and don't fall homesick despite being away from the family for months on end, a job in the Merchant Navy is perhaps your calling.
`Careers in Merchant Navy,' a Student Aid Publications offering, provides an overview of the job requirements, courses on offer and lists out various recruiting agencies. Common shipping terminology, syllabi, selection procedure and examination centres are useful features.
The Merchant Navy constitutes a variety of ships including cargo ships, container ships, tankers, refrigerator ships, bulk carriers, passenger ships and barges.
In addition to a good pay packet, a job in the Merchant Navy brings food and entertainment facilities, income tax benefits and free boarding/lodging.
Though most jobs are on contract, some companies have started offering permanent employment. It is estimated that there is a shortage of over 10,000 Merchant Navy officers on an international count.
The departments in a Merchant Navy, broadly speaking, can be classified as Navigation and Marine Engineering. Of these, the main wings are the Deck Department, Engineer Department and Service Department.
In the Deck Department, people who work are the Master/Chief Mate or Captain, First Mate, Second Mate, Third Mate, Harbour Master, Pilot, Serang etc; The basic duty of the Deck Officers or Nautical Officers is related to manoeuvring the ship and to see that it moves on the right course.
The Engineer Department is manned by a Ship Engineer, Second Engineer, Third andFourth Engineers apart from the other staff. The responsibility of this department is to ensure proper maintenance and functioning of the engines and machinery on the ship. This department has an electrical officer and radio officer and the Sea Canny who steers the vessel.
The Ratings Department carries out physical activities under the supervisor. The department is headed by a Chief Steward and Chief Cook, coks, mess men etc; Also under this unit are nautical surveyors, light keepers, dress divers and skin divers.
